If you've ever wanted to explore Night City with friends, CyberMP is bringing that dream closer to reality. This fan-made multiplayer modification for Cyberpunk 2077 is being built by a dedicated 10-person team. After over a year in production, they just wrapped up a closed beta benchmark that put server stability, player synchronization, and general multiplayer performance to the test.

Fresh footage from the test shows players cruising through Night City, hanging out at Lizzie's Bar, and getting into chaotic shootouts with various weapons and explosives. The devs aren't stopping there, the latest updates even preview online racing and PvP modes, alongside much-needed fixes for vehicle synchronization.

CyberMP Reaches 66 Players During Stress Test

During a recent stress test, the project hit a peak of 66 players on a single server. The team noted that while everything stayed smooth with 30 to 40 players online simultaneously, things like network lag and synchronization problems started to creep in once the player count climbed higher.

The team is now digging through telemetry data to clear out network bottlenecks and polish the multiplayer architecture. It's a tough job because Cyberpunk 2077 was built as a solo journey, not for a multiplayer server infrastructure. That means the mod has to work extra hard to synchronize player movements, vehicles, and combat across every client.

Nailing vehicle synchronization remains a massive hurdle, especially when you consider how much processing power is needed to keep Night City's dense streets looking consistent for everyone connected.

Naturally, people are comparing CyberMP to FiveM, the famous GTA V modding platform. But CyberMP is facing a steeper climb: GTA V already had an official multiplayer foundation to build on, whereas Cyberpunk 2077 was never intended for online play. It's also worth noting that FiveM eventually became so successful that Rockstar Games actually acquired the Cfx.re team in 2023.

For now, CyberMP is still an independent project without a set release date. The developers are staying focused on squashing bugs and optimizing server performance before they let a wider audience jump in.

This fan effort is especially interesting since CD Projekt Red originally had its own plans for Cyberpunk multiplayer before pivoting toward broader online technology back in 2021.

Hype is definitely building, registration for recent tests filled up almost instantly. We're still waiting on news for future test dates.

Looking ahead, the mod's future will depend on community management and moderation. But honestly, managing to get 40 players together in a game that was never meant for it is already a huge win for the CyberMP team.
