The Esports World Cup (EWC) Foundation has launched its 2027 Qualifier Program, creating new opportunities for established tournament organisers and grassroots gaming communities to compete for places at the global championship. The initiative, part of the Road to EWC, aims to reach 1.8 million players through more than 400 events worldwide in 2027.
Two Qualification Pathways Introduced
The programme introduces two routes: EWC Direct Qualifiers and EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (SLCQs).
Direct Qualifiers connect established esports tournaments to the Road to EWC. Organisers can continue running and funding events under their own identities while retaining local commercial opportunities, provided they meet the competition's requirements and publisher standards.
The Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers focus on grassroots participation. Local tournament organisers, esports federations, associations, cybercafés, universities, esports venues and gaming festivals can apply to connect existing competitions or establish new tournaments with support from the Esports Foundation.
Chess and Three Other Games Included
The initial Satellite Last Chance Qualifier lineup features Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves and Street Fighter 6. Additional titles are expected to be announced later.
The expanded system could help players outside established professional circuits access more structured competitive opportunities. Chess is particularly relevant to Indian audiences: Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi reached the final of the India Rising qualifier for EWC 2026, while Grandmaster Karthik Venkataraman finished in the top 12 of the Last Chance Qualifiers.
Applications Open Until December 20
Winners of approved Satellite competitions will receive guaranteed entry into the relevant EWC Last Chance Qualifiers scheduled for summer 2027. They must still compete there for a place in the main event. The Esports Foundation will provide accommodation and visa support for these winners.
All participating competitions must follow publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards, including official rulesets, anti-cheat measures, officiating and result verification.
Applications for both qualification pathways are open until December 20, 2026, and approved events must conclude by June 1, 2027. Further details about Direct Qualifier partners, participating tournaments and qualification slots will be announced as the Road to EWC 2027 develops.
