Nongshim RedForce had swept NRG when a Masters Santiago grand-final place was on the line. In Shanghai, NRG returned the favour to begin their world-title defence.

The reigning Champions winners beat Nongshim 2–0 in their VALORANT Champions 2026 Group D opener on September 25, taking Lotus 13–5 before surviving a tougher finish on Split, 13–10.

It was a convincing start with a test of nerve at the end. Nongshim threatened to drag the series to a decider, but NRG closed the door before their comfortable lead became a much bigger problem.

Mada sets the pace on Lotus

NRG chose Lotus and quickly made the pick count. An 8–4 halftime lead gave them control, and Nongshim managed only one round after the sides switched.

Mada’s Raze supplied the firepower. He finished with 22 kills, 11 deaths and 340 average combat score on Lotus, helping NRG take the opening map without a prolonged fight.

The series totals showed support across the roster. Mada led NRG with 34 kills, while brawk and keiko added 32 each and skuba contributed 30. Every NRG player finished with more kills than deaths.

NRG’s Split gamble survives a late scare

Split presented a different challenge. According to VLR’s match report, NRG had not played the map since April. They returned with mada on Neon and keiko on Raze in a new double-duelist composition.

Coach bonkar explained afterwards that the lineup centred on player comfort, with keiko strongly pushing for the approach. His description was straightforward: “Comfort picks for everyone.”

The setup helped NRG establish a 9–3 halftime lead, but Nongshim kept the match alive by winning the second-half pistol. The Korean side made the finish considerably less comfortable, reaching double figures before NRG secured the final round they needed.

The 13–10 result completed the sweep and left Sunset unplayed. Lotus had shown NRG’s ability to take control; Split tested their ability to finish the job when an opponent fought back.

A familiar opponent, a different outcome

Their previous meeting at Masters Santiago had ended with Nongshim winning the upper final 2–0. That result sent Nongshim directly to the championship match and forced NRG into the lower bracket.

Shanghai offered different stakes, but a clear reversal. This time, NRG claimed the safer route through the group, while Nongshim were left with no room for another series defeat.

Karmine Corp await in the qualification match

The Group D bracket now pairs NRG with Karmine Corp on September 29. The winner advances to the playoffs; the loser gets another chance in the decider.

Nongshim face Xi Lai Gaming on October 1 in an elimination match.

NRG’s opening win does not settle the title race. It does settle this rematch—and puts the defending champions one victory away from the playoffs.
