The Chennai Esports Global Championship (CEGC) 2026 began its BGMI competition on November 3, but its opening day quickly attracted criticism over broadcast quality. Fans expressed disappointment with the tournament's stream after Skyesports CEO Shiva Nandy acknowledged that the production was operating without the Observer Client and API.
CEGC 2026 Broadcast Draws Criticism
The Day 1 matches were streamed exclusively on Kick, where viewers raised concerns about the overall viewing experience. The broadcast relied heavily on the game's standard spectator interface instead of the more polished observer-driven production commonly seen in major esports tournaments.
The stream featured basic in-game visuals, player counters, a minimap and a compass, alongside tournament-specific match information and team statistics. However, viewers criticised the graphics, camera work and commentary, with some comparing the broadcast quality to regular scrims rather than a major competitive event.
Responding to the criticism, Nandy stated on X that without the Observer Client and API, the existing broadcast was the extent of what Skyesports could deliver.
Why the Observer Client Matters
The Observer Client is a dedicated spectator version of the game that allows tournament production teams to manage camera movements, switch between players and squads, and deliver more professional-looking broadcasts.
The API also provides access to live match information, including kills, knocks and team status, allowing production teams to integrate real-time statistics into broadcast graphics.
Without these tools, organisers have to depend on regular in-game spectating and collect match statistics separately, limiting the overall presentation.
₹1.25 Crore Tournament Continues Through December
Despite the broadcast controversy, CEGC 2026 remains one of the major events in India's BGMI competitive calendar. Organised by Skyesports in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government, the tournament features 32 teams competing in the Squads TPP format for a prize pool of ₹1.25 crore.
The competition began with its first group stage on November 3, scheduled to continue until November 13, followed by additional stages, a Last Chance Qualifier and the LAN Grand Finals from December 11 to 13 in Chennai.
The event is also the second edition of CEGC, following its inaugural edition in 2025.
With several weeks of competition remaining, the broadcast criticism has placed additional attention on Skyesports' production arrangements. Whether improvements can be made before the upcoming stages remains to be seen.
