South Korea is back on top of the Overwatch World Cup. The team defeated Saudi Arabia 4–1 in the 2026 grand final to claim its fourth championship and its first since 2018.

But the road to the trophy was far less comfortable than the final score suggests. After sweeping the United States 3–0 in the quarterfinals, Korea fell two maps behind France in the semifinals. One more loss would have ended its tournament.

Instead, Korea won three consecutive maps to complete a reverse sweep and book its place in the final. The comeback also avenged its group-stage defeat to France in Busan, where the French team had pulled off a reverse sweep of its own.

Saudi Arabia struck first in the grand final, taking the opening map, Nepal. Korea responded with four straight map wins to secure gold. France finished third after beating Sweden 3–1 in the bronze-medal match.

For South Korea’s players, the victory meant reclaiming a title the country had once dominated. Support player Kim “Simple” Ji-sung said he had felt a responsibility to restore Korea’s position as World Cup champions. Choi “MAX” Su-min also spoke about what winning while representing his country meant to him.

Overwatch World Cup 2026 sets new viewership record

South Korea’s title win also drew a record audience. Returning after three years away, the Overwatch World Cup peaked at 401,068 concurrent viewers during the grand final.

According to Esports Charts, that was the highest peak in World Cup history and the second-highest among all Overwatch tournaments tracked by the platform. The previous World Cup record stood at around 321,900 viewers, set during South Korea’s clash with the United States in 2017.

The growth extended beyond the final. The 2026 edition generated more than 10.1 million hours watched, an increase of 83.7% over 2023. Average concurrent viewership reached approximately 173,100, up 34.2%.

Coverage expanded to more than 600 channels, roughly eight times the number in 2023. Twitch accounted for 77.5% of total watch time, while YouTube, CHZZK and SOOP shared the remainder.

With South Korea back on top and more fans tuning in, the World Cup’s return gave Overwatch plenty to celebrate.
